Mechanical Descaling Systems

Overview

All WILCO mechanical descaling systems will descale and clean hot-rolled carbon steel wire rod in preparation for wire drawing. All models are intended for installation inline with your wire drawing machine between the rod payoff and ripper die.

Everything starts with the WILCO model 310 reverse bend scale breaker, common to all models in the WILCO product family. Three sheaves, each with solid tungsten carbide wear rings, bend the wire rod in a controlled manner to flex and elongate the ductile steel rod while the inflexible oxide scale breaks loose from the base metal. Secondary cleaning of scale fines, required for any wire drawing operation, immediately follows scale breaking and may be accomplished by various models of WILCO cleaning systems. From basic air jet to advanced automatic wire brushing, let us help you select the WILCO descaling system best suited to your unique wire drawing needs.

WILCO Model 1030 Water Jet Descaling System

The WILCO Model 1030 Water Jet Decaling System is also well suited for the production of commodity type wire products. Unique to the 1030 is its ability to directly descale wire rod which is wet as a result of outdoor rod storage. The three-stage design uses a combination of high volume water flow and compressed air to remove scale dust from the rod surface. Cleaning water is constantly recirculated throughout the 110 litter closed loop system with scale residues removed by a magnetic filter.

System Capability

Rod Diameter 7/32″ – 1/2″ (5.5 mm – 12.7 mm)
Rod Speed Up to 850 FPM (4.3 m/s)
Adjustable Rod Line Height 31″ – 41″ (79 cm – 104 cm)

Utility Requirements

Space 76″ X 68″ (1.9 m X 1.7 m)
Electrical Standard is 220V, 3Ph, 60Hz (All 3-Phase supplies available)
Air 22 – 24 CFM – 11 l/s at 90 PSI – 6.2 bar
Water Initially 35 gal (132 l)

WILCO Model 1060 Descaler + Pre-Coater

The WILCO Model 1060 fits the need of manufacturers wanting to mechanically descale various grades of steel wire rod for higher quality wire products or where the material is of a tougher nature such as high carbon rod. Wire drawing operations will benefit from the additional lubrication applied by the WILCO Model 1060. Rod cleaning and coating occurs by utilizing a combination of compressed air and 185°F (85 °C) cleaning/pre-coating solution directed at the rod surface through specially engineered nozzles. Coated rod is continuously dried on the fly by an efficient tungsten carbide air wipe at the exit of the coating head. The WILCO Model 1060 is designed to use a variety of commercially available lubricant pre-coat compounds.

System Capability

Rod Diameter 7/32″ – 1/2″ (5.5 mm – 12.7 mm)
Rod Speed 850 FPM – based on pre-coating compound used
Adjustable Rod Line Height 31″ – 41″ (79 cm – 104 cm)

Utility Requirements

Space 76″ X 21.5″ (1.9 m X 0.55 m)
Electrical Standard is 440 V, 3 Ph, 60 Hz (All supplies over 380 V available)
Air 13 – 15 CFM – 6 l/s at 90 PSI – 6.2 bar
Water Initially 50 gallons (189l)

WILCO Model 1250 Automatic Brush Descaler

WILCO aggressive mechanical descaling systems incorporate the WILCO Automatic Rod Brushing Machine to clean the rod surface using a series of eight (8) steel wire brushes. The steel wire brushes are commercially available and not proprietary to Wire Lab Company.  The use of wire brushes allows customers to use wire rods of various quality and surface condition as the input material, yet the mechanical descaled rod will be a consistently clean, high-quality rod for making into higher quality wire products.

Advanced electronic controls constantly monitor and automatically adjust wire brush pressure to assure consistent cleaning.

One of the most economical aggressive descaling system available, the WILCO Model 1250 will process one ton of wire rod for approximately US $3.00.

System Capability

Rod Diameter 7/32″ – 1/2″ (5.5 mm – 12.7 mm)
Rod Speed Up to 350 FPM (1.8 m/s) – based on wire rod condition.  See Wire Rod Rust Guide.
Adjustable Rod Line Height 31″ – 41″ (79 cm – 104 cm)

Utility Requirements

Space 69″ X 48″ (1.75 m X 1.2 m)
Electrical Standard is 440 V, 3 Ph, 60 Hz (All supplies over 380 V available)
Air None
Water None

WILCO Model 1250DB Descaler with Dual Automatic Brushing Heads

When the wire rod condition is especially unfavorable or wire drawing speeds particularly high (greater than 500 FPM through the descaler) you can maintain production levels by the use of a WILCO descaling system with dual automatic brushing heads. Any aggressive descaling process is time-related, therefore, the use of dual automatic brushing heads enables the use of wire rods with excessive corrosion or even a secondary scale layer without having to reduce line speed. When used on wire rods with more typical scale quality the output descaled rod will have a superior surface finish making possible the production of the highest quality wire products.

System Capability

Rod Diameter 7/32″ – 1/2″ (5.5 mm – 12.7 mm)
Rod Speed Up to 650 FPM (3.3 m/s) Based on wire rod condition.  See Wire Rod Rust Guide.
Adjustable Rod Line Height 31″ – 41″ (79 cm – 104 cm)

Utility Requirements

Space 125″ X 48″ (3.17 m X 1.2 m)
Electrical Standard is 440 V, 3 Ph, 60 Hz (All supplies over 380 V available)
